Boudoir photography has become bigger than engagement photos. Since my generation, really, people have just become so much more comfortable putting it all out there. Look at all the pole-dancing classes at gyms and moms throwing lingerie parties — there’s just a comfort level that wasn’t there before.

A lot of women come to capture a moment in time before they lose it: They’ve just got married, haven’t had kids yet, and their body is where they want it to be. Or they’ve just got a boob job and a tummy tuck. But it’s not like they walk in, just ready to take it all off. They start with hair and makeup in the back while I get the blow-up bed ready out here in the studio. They’re back there, sometimes with a friend, just being girly-giggly and nervously chatting. That’s where the transformation begins.

People don’t really know what their “sexy look” is. I’ll try to help by telling them to look at the camera like they look at their man, but it’s not like you look in the mirror when you do that. So that’s what I have them do: Go stand in the mirror and practice what looks best. If you’re a smiler, then smile. That sexy Victoria’s Secret pout thing doesn’t work for everyone. It’s more sexy to just be you. My friends laugh because I’m the one telling people how to be sexual. I can’t think of one single sexy pose I’ve done. The lingerie I bought for Valentine’s Day last year is still sitting in the bag upstairs.

These women let me see them in ways no one else does. They trust me, and I think that being a woman helps, because I can commiserate and make fun of my own flaws. That’s what women do, right? We bond over our flaws. But here’s the difference: I can tell them about my C-section stomach or lopsided whatever to make them feel comfortable about whatever jiggles, but then I assure them that I have all the tricks to hide their flaws. I know the angle and the lens to make those stretch marks disappear. And I have eight hours of Photoshop ahead of me if that doesn’t work.

Rae + Will : Carnegie Institution Wedding

Rae and Will had a beautiful Georgetown wedding on the 16th of January. The ceremony was at the gorgeous Holly Trinity DC church. They really lucked out and had beautiful warm weather no one would expect in January. After walking around historic Georgetown for photos they headed over to the Carnegie Institution of Science where the guests danced the night away. What a great way to start our 2010 season!

Kate and Nick : Georgetown Engagement

I can’t think of a better way to start off the New Year of us then to jump right back into shooting and hang out with these two cuties…we had a blast even though it’s been just a little too cold for DC lately. Kate and Nick bared the elements and rocked out their engagement session. I am sad I won’t be at the wedding but I know she’ll send me some images. I secretly want to move with them as Nick talked about the average temps! Congrats you two. You guys are beyond perfect for each other.

Mary + Max : Springfield Golf & Country Club Wedding

Little did any of us know that when Mary and Max picked December 19th that they would enjoy being part of history in DC for the few to get married during the blizzard and an average of 20 inches of snow. This wedding had challenges for a lot of their guests and vendors but honestly I don’t think anyone could have handled it better then these two. They were also huge troopers as Chris and I played around with the concept of adding audio to our slideshows and we should have the slideshow up tonight. Below are the highlights. Congrats again to you too!

Happy New Years!

Wow I can honestly say this year moved faster then any other year in my life. I have really spent a lot of time thinking about how quickly it did move and what is really important in my life. We shot over 30 weddings, too many engagement sessions to count and a lot of boudoirs sessions. Many albums and print orders went through the studio. We also managed some how to open our new studio in Old Town Alexandria. Not to forget that an end of year party that I have yet to blog the images from. Needless to say the least we have been extremely busy. We are all looking forward to 2010, I am excited about all the new ideas we have in the woodwork. I am also proud of myself for learning to give up things that just couldn’t be done by one person. Lately I have been feeling a lot more like a human being vs the girl that lives behind her MAC. I am sure my family, friends and health appreciate me for finally coming to terms with my ability not to do it all. Just wanted to drop a quick line before we head out to enjoy New Years as a family. It’s been a great year and I am so looking forward to all the great things of 2010! I wish everyone the best for 2010.

We had several clients come in for presents for the significant others right before the holidays. Looking forward to the sessions already on the books for Valentine’s Day gifts. I can’t think of better gifts. We now offer calendars and promise to share some images of them next time I stop in the studio.
